Avenue de Champagne in Épernay

City guide

Winter in Épernay

Épernay is compact enough to explore on foot. Avenue de Champagne, Château Perrier and a booked producer tour fill one or two winter days.

Begin on Avenue de Champagne

The avenue is the centre of a visit to Épernay, with historic mansions above ground and an extensive network of cellars below. Tasting rooms and tour schedules vary more in winter than in summer, so check them before setting out.

Château Perrier houses the Champagne Wine and Regional Archaeology Museum and is the best indoor stop in town. Its displays cover the landscape, archaeology and history of Champagne.

Choose one house and one grower

A large house provides scale, architecture and production history. A grower visit gives a more personal account of vineyards and blending. Pairing the two is more useful than booking several similar house tours.

Independent producers commonly require an appointment, especially in January and February. A guided half-day tour solves transport and opening-hour problems while allowing everyone in the group to taste.

Winter evenings and Habits de Lumière

Outside the December festival weekend, Épernay becomes quiet after the cellar doors close. Reserve dinner, especially on Sunday or Monday, and expect a low-key evening.

During Habits de Lumière, Avenue de Champagne fills with light shows, Champagne bars, gastronomy and fireworks. Accommodation should be booked well ahead for those dates.

Add the surrounding villages

Aÿ-Champagne, Hautvillers and the Côte des Blancs are close on a map but awkward to combine by public transport. Choose a guided circuit or taxi rather than improvising several village transfers.

If weather is clear, a short vineyard viewpoint is worthwhile. In rain or wind, Pressoria in Aÿ and an additional tasting workshop are stronger winter choices.
