Winter vineyards in Champagne seen from a regional route

Practical itinerary

Champagne without a car

Base yourself near a station, reserve one tour with transport and use the train between Reims and Épernay. A car-free winter weekend is entirely realistic.

Day one: Reims on foot

Arrive at Reims Centre, leave luggage near the station and walk through the centre to the cathedral. Reserve an afternoon cellar visit in the city and dinner near the centre.

Some Saint-Nicaise houses are beyond the tight historic core. Use local public transport or a taxi rather than assuming every cellar is a five-minute walk.

Day two: Épernay or a guided circuit

Take a regional train to Épernay for Avenue de Champagne, Château Perrier and a booked house visit. This works well when you want a town-focused day.

For villages and growers, choose a minivan departure from Reims or Épernay. It removes the weakest part of a car-free plan: irregular connections between wine villages.

Where to stay

Reims offers the widest train and restaurant choice. Épernay gives a more intimate Champagne atmosphere and easy morning access to the avenue.

Do not change hotels for a two-night trip. Pick one base and make the other city a day excursion.

Winter transport checks

Confirm the final train after evening events, especially during Habits de Lumière. Sunday timetables may be thinner and strikes or engineering can affect plans.

Keep taxi numbers and the operator’s meeting point saved offline. Tours may leave from the station, tourist office or a central hotel rather than your accommodation.
